On Sept. 23-24 the shouts of a lively quilt auction and the smells of apple fritters, chicken barbecue and homemade pie will fill the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds for the 38th annual Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale ä with all sale proceeds going to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a worldwide relief agency now in its 86th year of operation.

Each year all over North America, thousands of volunteers come together to raise money to be distributed through MCC for the relief of suffering in the world. Over $5 million was raised in 2004 with 88 percent sent to the field, and with nearly 30,000 persons attending, the Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale raised over $500,000 of that total.

This year, beginning on Friday, Sept. 23 with an open house from 5-9 p.m., and then continuing on Saturday, Sept. 24 with the sale day from 6 a.m. to mid-afternoon, the relief sale will again offer something for everyone: five auctions, a smorgasbord of foods, a worship service, a run/walk for relief, and a sale area with donated homemade crafts, homegrown items and merchandise from Ten Thousand Villages, a nonprofit program of MCC which creates income for about 30,000 artisans from 33 developing nations. Admission and parking are free and open to the public.

invalid font number 0 =-->GOSHEN, Ind. ä When the crowds gather on Sept. 23-24 at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen for the 38th Annual Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale, the recent Hurricane Katrina will be on many people's minds as the money raised from the auctioning of quilts and the consumption of apple fritters, chicken barbecue and homemade pie will directly support Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) as it partners with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) to respond to this disaster and to other needs around the world.
invalid font number 0 =--> MDS is MCC's sister organization in representing the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches in Canada and the United States in disaster response. MDS conducts domestic disaster response in Canada and the U.S. while MCC focuses on international disaster response. Because of the enormity and diverse response needed for Hurricane Katrina, MDS has requested that MCC assist them in making material resources and emergency supplies available where MDS makes a request within the hurricane damage zone.

MDS has already established three bases of operation in the week after Katrina hit å in Mobile. Ala., and Meridian and Gulfport, Miss., å and are beginning clean-up work with chainsaw crews from neighboring states, while continuing to investigate further needs.

This year's sale has a new auction ä a silent one. Among the items up for sale are a $10,000 coupon for entry to independent living at any Greencroft retirement community location, a 2003 Frontier Fifth Wheel RV donated by K-Z RV and a very special quilt from the first Mennonite Relief Sale.

GOSHEN, Ind. -- Since when is helping people around the world this much fun?

On Sept. 22-23 the shouts of a lively quilt auction and the smells of apple fritters, chicken barbecue and homemade pie will fill the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds for the 39th annual Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale with all sale proceeds going to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a worldwide relief agency now in its 87th year of operation.

Each year all over North America, thousands of volunteers come together to raise money to be distributed through MCC for the relief of suffering in the world. Over $5 million was raised in 2005 with 88 percent sent to the field; with nearly 30,000 persons attending, the Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale raised over $512,000 of that total.

Robb Davis, Executive Director of Mennonite Central Committee, leads the organization that benefits from the Relief Sale. "For more than 85 years MCC has worked with local partners, churches and communities around the world in the name of Christ. We strive to demonstrate God's love by working among people suffering from poverty, conflict and oppression, and to live and proclaim peace and justice to all people...The relief sale epitomizes this effort as people volunteer their time and energy to make the event a time of learning about the challenges of global injustice and poverty and how God is at work in places that seem without hope."

This year, beginning on Friday, Sept. 22 with an open house from 5-9 p.m., and then continuing on Saturday, Sept. 23 with the sale day from 6 a.m. to mid-afternoon, the relief sale will again offer something for everyone: five auctions, a smorgasbord of foods, a worship service, a run/walk for relief, and a sale area with donated homemade crafts, homegrown items and merchandise from Ten Thousand Villages, a nonprofit program of MCC which creates income for about 30,000 artisans from 33 developing nations. Admission and parking are free and open to the public. Camping sites are also available.
