Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale: Past & Present

Mennonite Relief Sales have a 40+ year history in the United States, with all proceeds going to support the Mennonite Central Committee. These articles are on a variety of topics related to the Relief Sale and were written by Goshen College students for a Feature Writing course.
"Relief Sale Fame", by Anna Groff

When Elizabeth Miller, a junior at Goshen College, attends the annualMichiana Mennonite Relief Sale she looks forward to treating herself toone apple fritter and buying a couple extra to share with her collegefriends while sitting in on the quilt auction. The apple fritters, madeby Yellow Creek Mennonite Church, sell for 40 cents a piece or threefor a dollar.

"Shalom House", by Brian Schlabach


Some of the most valued houses in Michiana were some of the leastexpensive to build. With donated materials and volunteer labor, 14“Shalom Houses” have been built in Michigan and Indiana since 1987.Volunteers have built one Shalom House each year to raise money for theMichiana Mennonite Relief Sale. After its completion, the house,usually a ranch-style, is sold and all the proceeds go toward the therelief sale.

"1,300 Chairs", by Megan Blank

While walking around the Michiana Relief Sale, it is easy to forgetthat someone had to set up all of the booths, tables and chairs, andafter all the people leave, someone has to see to it that all thebooths are taken down again. Imagine having to make sure that 1,300chairs are set up for the quilt auction alone.
